    Not Built to Last
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned this sprayer for 2 years. When it has worked, it has worked very well. But it does take an unreasonable amount of time — at least an hour, for me — to clean it properly. Given that, it is not the tool you pull out for anything less than a half-day’s worth of painting. On a small job, this sprayer will take much longer to clean than the time it saves. On a huge job, it’s extremely quick at covering a large surface and leaves a high quality attention of paint — very smooth and well dispersed.

My disappointment is that after only three uses in two years, the sprayer seems to have self destructed. First it started spewing expensive paint out of its side — lost about a quart before I noticed what was going on. Then the engine just plain quit. It will not turn on. I am not optimistic Wagner will repair it for any sort of reasonable price given that the refurb models are only $107 on Amazon. My deal is this: When I invest a couple hundred dollars on a tool, I expect it to last for years. I don’t see it as a disposable item. If you are in this camp, this is not the airless sprayer for you. Spend a bit more and get a higher quality unit.

    Qualified RESULTS!!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This Paint Crew unit was working without flaws.

I’ve read all the negative reviews and upon using this unit for six straight hours I

had NO failures at all, except only when the extension cord was disconnected without

my knowing , and still it sprayed until it had no more pressure and thats when I notice.

I’ve have rented many expensive sprayers from time to time and the the results were no better than

the Paint Crew. And to top it off, this was a RECONDITIONED from the factory with fantastic results

and it sprayed with qualified results. Plus I was spraying in windy situation 10-16 mph winds

    and it with fantastic coverage..

Clean up was simple, But with any paint job clean up its gonna a small time (20-30 mins.) to get into all the voids and crannys, But well worth it. Whatever was left in the hopper was simple to pour back into the can or bucket or if there’s just a small spray it on your project until out. What I done when I was end was pull out the prime hose ran the unit in prime mode until clear, got the water hose wash the hopper clean, and then refilled the hopper with clean water ran the unit in spray mode and sprayer until the unit sprayed clear. disconnected the hose and the spray wand ,took apart spray wand the take out the inline filter(VERY INPORTANT) scrub filter clean or if you want disgard and buy new one.

If you plot to use brushes and rollers of curse its gonna be timely, and if you plot to reuse those rollers excellent luck on that clean up time.

This sprayer outways square rollers and brushes with just a reasonal amount of clean up.

Of course thers better and more expensive sprayers out there but why pay more when you can have the same results.

    BUY this unit,its worth it!

I used this small machine to stain my mom’s 2 tale, 5 bedroom lake house last weekend. Me and another guy got all but the trim done in 10 hours. I taped up the windows and downspouts and he sprayed. There is no way we could have gotten so much done in so small a time frame without this. I consider it a prosumer model because it has a excellent motor but not all the knobs and adjustments a qualified model would. For the price, this thing was such a fantastic value and time saver.

The machine applied the stain pretty well. There was some overspray with the stain but considering this machine can apply very thick paint as well, I’m not surprised by this. There’s no adjustment for the psi; not a huge deal, just get masks, goggles, and a cap if working with stain.

Clean up took 30-40 minutes for cleaning inside and out. We used at least a gallon of paint thinner to do this.

    Best painting toll ever

Painted my house and stockade fence around my yard with this. I despise to paint but this made it fun and quick. I was even able to paint areas which I could not reach or get to as the pressure is sufficient to paint areas 4 feet away. I bought a used Paint Crew and it looks and works like new. I also bought the roller attachment to use on interior walls but haven’t tried it yet. Clean-up after using latex paint takes 10-15 minutes using water. Got a lot to paint – get one of these.

    Paint Crew Performs
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Wagner Paint crew sprayer really does the job right. It was a snap to assemble and get ready to paint. I had a large fence that needed to be done with a 1 man crew. It worked well, as advertised. The paint went on just right and the long hose made it simple to get into the corners and avoid the trees and bushes. In small it does an outstanding paint job with very small effort. Clean-up was not hard, but to do it right it is a bit time consuming. Be careful with the small washers and parts in the sprayer handle. The filter has to be cleaned carefully so it doesn’t get any holes or snags. You need to have a excellent place where you can spray out the cleaning solution (soap and water and paint residue.) That is an essential part of the cleaning process. It may take 45 minutes or more because there is a lot of paint residue in the 25 foot long hose. I had a spot in my “wild” area in the back of the yard, which was out of sight. I wasn’t concerned about environmental problems since the clean up was done with no chemicals. Without a place you can spray into, you would need a couple of large tubs or buckets to ensure a full clean-out. And that clean-out can be a bit messy. Overall, I was very pleased and the job went about 5 times quicker than the older one quart sized paint sprayer that I had used before. Definately recommend this sprayer, above all for outside work on fences, outside furniture and siding.

    Nice painter
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This painter worked as described from the box. Was simple to set up and simple to use. I suppose all sprayers use a lot of paint but this uses a LOT of paint. Having the hose with the hand-held sprayer allows spraying at any angle, so much better than container sprayers. Be prepared to spend at least 30-45 minutes cleaning this unit after use. I would recommend this to anyone with moderately large paint projects. Very pleased.

Can be helpful for larger jobs
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I got one of these so that I could paint the house a small quicker, this time. Be sure to allow adequate time to mask off the windows and anything else you do not want paint on. It did spray evenly and the paint dries pretty quickly so you can get a second coat on honestly soon. I reckon this sprayer is excellent for larger, outside surfaces, like fences, outbuildings and barns that do not have windows. I would not use it for smooth or inside surfaces as there are better products for that like the Wagner Roller line. Wagner Power Products 0514001 Electric Power Roller with Trim Pad & Extension Handle

Be prepared to set aside a excellent chunk of time for clean up if you expect to be able to use it again on another day. Don’t lose the manual after you read it because you need to follow the set up and clean up directions. The only thing I would improve on this is to have the option of a longer hose.

Iam a novice when it comes to using a paint sprayer and looked at alot of reviews on the paint crew and weighed the options on pros and cons and Iam not at all miserable with this unit. There were 2 of us and we painted a 2 storey cedar house and it took us 7 hrs to do the whole job. There were some complaints that it took along time to clean up the unit but it did take some time but not too long (30-40)min or so. All I can say if I would have done it by roller or brush I would still be painting. As with anything you buy you take a chance on getting a lemon but Iam pleased with the paint crew

    Very Pleased So Far
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
At first I was skeptical of this product because of all the terrible reviews. Last weekend I pulled down all our shutters and plotted on putting on primer and paint on them by hand and I was plotting on painting the garager. Oh my goodness, it took me all day and I only had the primer on the shutters and paint on about 1/4 of the shutters. Despite many of the terrible reviews, I took a chance and bought this product.

While I have only painted with about 2 gallons so far, using this was a dream compared to painting by hand. Last night I painted all 32 shutters and the garage door and fully cleaned the machinge in about 2 and 1/2 hours. It was awesome. The machine worked impeccably with the only drawback that was in the other reviews that came right was when there was only a small bit of paint left in the hopper, the pump started to run all the time. I did not try to continue painting, I simply added more paint and away I went. Frankly the amount of paint left in the hopper when this happend was very very minimal.

The only reason at all I gave it four stars was because of the excessive clean up time. Out of the 2 1/2 hours, about 45 minutes to one hour was clean up. I really didn’t mind the clean up becuase I still was going to save about 5-6 hours over painting by hand.

It is really obvious during clean up that many of the other peoples problems came from not properly cleaning the machine. There are many small parts that could easily not function properly the next time if they were gunked up with paint that was not properly cleaned.

So if you mind some excessive clean up time, this machine may not be for you, otherwise I was very impressed and pleased with my buy. [...]

    Pleased Painting.

    Wagner = POS
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I had in the past tried a few other Wagner products. 3 to be exact and each one died before the job was finished. In the past I was repainting the inside of an apartment and it would get clogged or just die but it did a majority of it so I was pleased.

I have went on to a house and after speaking with some people at the local Home Depot and Lowes and they heard only excellent things about this I chose to try it again. I bought the reconditioned model from Amazon and when I took it out of the box and set it up it all worked very well. It looked groundbreaking new as a matter of fact, all nice and clean parts in their own bags. I had about 1/2 the house taped and ready to go so it started. I noticed that on the 3rd gallon or so the spray pattern was getting a small light but kept going as this thing place out a honest amount of paint. The 5th gallon down I only place in another one as that was all I needed to end the 2nd tale part I was at and about half way through it the thing just stopped. I was sure I blew a fuse or something but nada. Tried other plugs, nada.

The machine just stopped working. I still had pressure in the hose so I sprayed it out and after tinkering around with it could not get it to work again.

I don’t know how I missed the other terrible reviews on here. People either like it or despise it and I am the latter. I should have known better to trust Wagner again but I figured if I could even get 1/2 the house done it would be a excellent deal. I am left with a $115 paint tray that is utterly useless. I can’t even clean the unit or the hose as I can’t get the motor to turn on at all…

I will try the warranty option or returning it but Wagner needs to stop making things that are complete POS’s. 5 gallons, ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME!?!?!?!?!? I will NEVER buy another Wagner product ever again.

You feel fantastic, laugh-out-loud with power, unbelievably productive…but then really terrible things happen and you’re ruined.

I used this for several days. At first it was like “Harry Potter painting” — waive my magic wand and whatever I wanted was covered in paint. And nicely covered. Even. Clean. Complete.

But then, over the next few days I had clogs, issues, drop in power. I did thorough cleaning the first few days but then left it wrapped in wet towels and plastic as per the manual. Problems started. I was spending more time cleaning and debugging my painting tools than painting — than i would have spent with painting via traditional means. And over-spray cleanup…don’t even question.

Bottom line. If you can guarantee 30 min of incessant cleanup time at the end of each job (no, “come to dinner NOW” nonsense from the domestic boss), or, better, if you have a teenage son who’s sole job is cleaning the thing when you’re done, then, maybe, you can get fantastic value out of this. If you don’t have these things then small clogs will lead to larger ones until you say the hell with it and let the paint say in it overnight and you’re stuck with an hideous yellow piece of modern sculpture. Just like the one I am staring at now.

That first day was sure fun, though.

I bought the Wagner Paint Crew to paint the exterior of my house recently. A couple of years ago I painted a smaller house using brushes and rollers. Painting a larger house with the Paint Crew took a fraction of the time. I found it very simple to use right out of the box and had the hang of it within minutes. The clean-up process is a bit intricate, but not terrible once you’ve done it a time or two, and the lessons manual is quite clearly written and relatively simple to follow. I’m extremely pleased. I’ve also done some interior painting using a qualified grade sprayer, and the Paint Crew performs just as well. I would have to say this is the best money I’ve spent on a tool, in recent memory — and the price is extremely reasonable for what you get.

    Too Slow
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this item because of all the rave reviews. The unit works BUT, it is painfully slow, at least for me. I also had to go back and forth THREE times, to get sufficient Latex Primer on the siding I was painting. After using it ONCE, I cleaned it up and sold it in a garage sale for half what I had paid. Admittedly, it is low-priced. I bought a sprayer that cost 5 times as much, and I am 5 times more pleased. I do not do much spray painting, but when I do, I want to do it in as small time as possible.

I’ve owned a Graco sprayer and found it hard to clean and awkward when running low on paint. I’ve also owned the wagner hand held sprayer which was junk, so I was reluctant to by the crew sprayer. I was caught in a jam so I needed to get something virtually priced. Not only did I receive it quicker than expected, I thought I was dreaming at how fantastic it worked. The self contained paint area kept paint from drying out and it sprayed incredibly well & regular. The clean up was simple and storage was a piece of cake because of it’s design. I Like this thing and I was terrified to by it. This product and vendor are superb!!

I bought this unit to spray latex paint. The first round with it went pretty well, but the tip had a tendency to clog even after straining the paint and the filter in the gun handle. Regardless, it had a 10″ spray width (no adjustment) and did a pretty excellent job. What I didn’t realize was how much a pain it was going to be to clean the built in paint tray and linked parts. After the 3rd time using it I was cleaning the unit and the pump really quit pumping water. I troubleshooted it some, but then I gave up and returned it for a full refund. IMO, if you need an airless sprayer, get one where it has a tube to go into the paint or a hopper/bin that you can wash directly in water versus this thing.

Fantastic value in an simple to use sprayer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was all set to rent a pro unit to paint my garage, when I saw a deal on a reconditioned 770. Based on previous encounter with Wagner consumer spray guns, I was doubtful, but ordered it anyway. And I’m very glad I did.

Unlike the small diaphragm guns, this gun is light, simple to handle, and puts out a huge volume of paint with no spitting or dribbling. It easily handled the heavy acrylic latex I used on my garage.

The gun supplied with this sprayer is a qualified unit, and the pump puts out as much paint as a lot of commercial grade painters. After spending perhaps a half-hour taping and masking, I had my entire garage painted in less time than it took to do the prep!

Cleanup was maybe another half hour, and simple, using the Wagner cleaning and lube solution, if you carefully follow the directions in the booklet. Hint: After you pour out excess paint in the hopper, use a squeegee to get that lest bit back into the bucket, rinse it with water, and use heavy-duty paper towels to get the last bits out. Then fill the hopper with cleaner, flush, and lube.

One hint: You categorically want to install a swivel on the gun before using this unit- it’s low-priced, and makes handling the gun much, much simpler.

Brilliant Sprayer — *IF* You Maintain It!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve been reading through the reviews of the Paint Crew here and I can’t be with you how so many people have given this sprayer a terrible report. I’m sure that some may just be a defective product. Others I would imagine are due to poor maintenance.

First, this sprayer makes a despised chore (at least for me) into a much simpler process. The sprayer produces a very fine mist with very small overspray. It is akin to more expensive, service provider-grade airless sprayers. Obviously, the more expensive sprayers will last longer due to the fact that they are built for everyday, demanding use. The average homeowner but, will find the Paint Crew more than adequate and it should last for years with proper care. I must add that when I bought it, I had a small apprehension as I was going to be spraying Behr Elastomeric paint. This paint, for those who are not familiar, is a VERY heavy latex, “rubberized” coating. It’s about as thick a paint as you will ever find, and probably not what this sprayer is intended for. I thought that at the very least I would need to replace the stock inline filter and the 413 tip with larger, but the Paint Crew’s stock components worked perfectly, with NO clogging. The ONLY problem I had was that when the tank got to about 15% full, it would lose its prime. Adding more paint solved that problem. And this is where the Paint Crew’s one weakness shows. I am using 5-gallon buckets of elastomeric, and it would be fantastic if there was a suction kit, similar to what Wagner offers for its Paint Roller products, which would pump paint directly from the bucket. This would also help reduce cleanup somewhat.

The negatives here are no doubt mostly due to poor maintenance, in my opinion. You will get the same level of routine and longevity out of this sprayer that you place into it in cleanup. I tend to be a small obsessive compulsive about cleanup after any painting job whether it be with a sprayer, power roller, or just brushes and manual rollers. I tend to clean until the product is like new. This takes, in my estimation, maybe 20 minutes longer than what most people are putting into cleanup. If you take an ancient toothbrush and clean *ALL* traces of paint from the tank, valves, spray tip, and run water through the hose and spray handle until it runs clear for several minutes, then remove the inlet valve and oil the O-rings and add a small oil to the impeller (bottom of the inlet valve), even if you are going to paint the next day, you will NOT have a problem with this sprayer! Leave the slightest amount of paint on any part and you WILL have problems! Also, even though the manual says that you can leave paint in the tank and hoses without cleaning for up to 16 hours between uses, and has detailed directions for doing so, I do not recommend it! What will happen is that the paint WILL dry/gel in the hoses, and you will nearly certainly have problems. Just empty the tank and painstakingly clean it, the hoses, the handle, and the tip. All in all, cleanup takes maybe 30 minutes, but the time you save in painting and cleaning up all of your brushes, manual rollers, pans, etc will be MORE than worth it, the results are MUCH better, and the sprayer will last MUCH longer!

A comment was made about putting oil into this sprayer for maintenance. First, the amount of oil you are putting in is negligible compared to the amount of paint that you will place into the tank for your next job. Additionally, the excess oil will be blasted out of the spray tip with the very first pull of the trigger. For that reason, you will want to spray out the first small amount of paint against a piece of waste cardboard to discharge this excess oil. The only oil remaining after this will be a very small coating that will lubricate the O-rings, and reduce the amount of paint that will stick to them and require O-ring substitution. This is where I reckon a number of the maintenance problems are coming from. If you don’t follow the maintenance guidleines in the manual, you WILL have problems! You will NOT notice ANY oil in the paint that is sprayed out after this initial pull. So the oil/latex paint complaint is moot!

    Other negative comments:

    (1) “the ‘nut’ holding the outside part of the exit valve is a very large size and finding a wrench to take it off to clean it will be a problem unless you are an auto mechanic that works on diesel trucks,” RESPONSE: this fitting is simple to remove with a pair of slip-joint pliers, which every home SHOULD have as part of their emergency tool box.

    (2) “Handle over lid gets in the way when trying to remove lid to add more paint. That thing is always in the way.” RESPONSE: where else would they have place the handle? Still, there is PLENTY of room over the paint tray to pour in paint. As I said above, I am using huge, 5-gallon buckets. If I have enough room to hold one of those over the tray and pour, it’s a non-issue.

    (3) “they [Home Depot] said it DOESN’T HANDLE EXTERIOR LATEX paint very well.” RESPONSE: as I said, I am spraying unthinned Behr (Home Depot) Elastomeric paint with the stock inline filter, 413 tip with categorically NO clogging. I sprayed 25 gallons of Elastomeric and the sprayer still sprays as excellent as it did right out of the box. Elastomeric is about 5 times thicker than latex paint.

    (4) “I like the small drip catching channel under the pump-to-hose tie.” RESPONSE: I can find no such “channel,” nor has any paint dripped under the “pump-to-hose tie.” This is probably a sign that you didn’t tighten the hose to the pump sufficiently.

    (5) “the spray is heavy at times and light at others” RESPONSE: I’ve found it to be very regular throughout all 25 gallons of paint that I sprayed, and the output is brilliant. I painted 3000 square feet of a two-tale house in 10 hours total. This includes the time I hand painted a lot of trim with a brush, moving scaffolding and ladders, and time I spent masking a LOT of windows and trim. Additionally, because you must spray elastomeric VERY heavy (20 – 30 mils wet film), and it requires two coats, I would consider the amount of time I spent painting to be minimal.

    (6) “the paint bin is hard to empty” RESPONSE: Not at all. You tip one corner over your paint can just like you would a paint roller tray. Emptying either one is just as simple.

    (7) “What is the deal with the white plastic filter in the hopper that has to be depressed to open a valve to the pump? Because that sucks! Sometimes the valve pops up after you have added paint and then you get to stick your hand in the paint to depress the filter and thus the valve” RESPONSE: The white filter is a piece of plastic which filters any debris that may be in the paint from the can before it flows into the inlet valve. There is NOTHING to depress which “opens a valve to the pump!” There is NO valve that can just “pop up!” The inlet valve requires a special fitting (included) and a socket wrench and some force to remove, and the outlet valve also requires a LOT of force to remove and doesn’t reside in the “hopper.” There is NO reason to stick your hand into the paint, and the filter cannot just “pop off!” I can’t for the life of me figure out what the reviewer is talking about here!

    (8) “Was that really the best place to place an in-line filter….in the handle?” RESPONSE: Ummm .. yes. The paint flows through the hose, then through the handle, and the inline filter is placed in the handle JUST BEFORE the exit point of the paint through the the spray tip. The filter also helps to atomize the paint, giving the fine droplets that emerge from the tip and giving a qualified looking spray. If the filter were placed earlier in the circuit, the spray would be much coarser, giving poor results.

    (9) “the cord to the unit is very small which means I had to use an extension cord every time I ran the machine,” RESPONSE: it’s small for two reasons. One, safety. Two, it makes it much simpler, and safer, to cart around a paint sprayer which may be filled with a lot of paint with a shorter cord. Anyone who thinks they can do a large scale painting job (which let’s face it is the sole purpose for using a paint sprayer) without also using an extension cord is dreaming, and probably should have hired a qualified to start with!

    (10) “the unit pulls a lot of power and I tripped breakers more than once” RESPONSE: never once did I trip a breaker. The unit pulls 115 VDC, and draws less than 15 amps. Your electric circuit is probably faulty, and perilous, and you should probably consult an electrician.

    (12) “There is no way to know if your hose is really tight enough until you turn the pump on and and are bathed in a lovely white semi-gloss latex.” RESPONSE: Yes there is. Tighten it sufficiently, and until you can tighten it no more.

    (13) “cleaning the bin and cleaning in general takes an enormous amount of water” RESPONSE: Welcome to painting! It ALWAYS takes a lot of water to clean up after painting, but then you don’t paint every day of the year!

    (14) “So…waterbased paint in a pump that can rust?” RESPONSE: You aren’t leaving the paint in the sprayer (the paint is merely flowing through the pump), the parts that the paint come in contact with aren’t steel anyway, the tank is plastic, and ALL paint pumps, even pro models are made out of steel and plastic. Clean it sufficiently, and oil it (YES, oil!) when cleaning it as the manual states and the pump will never have a chance to rust.

    (15) “the gun leaks at the handle unless tightened to a max degree of force” RESPONSE: I never had a leak, but then I tightened with a “max degree of force” since this sprayer (as do ALL high quality paint sprayers) sprays at about 2800 pounds of force! Listen people, you don’t have to be Arnold Schwarzenegger in his Mr Olympia days to properly tighten the fittings, hoses, or spray gun, but you DO have to tighten them sufficiently or you WILL have leaks! If you are that weak that you cannot do so, then should you really be climbing ladders and such trying to paint your own house?! If not, hire a qualified.

    (16) “the hose is like trying to control a vehicle suspension spring as it is hard to go (it is not like an air hose – this hose is not flexible)” RESPONSE: Yes. The hose COULD have been made a small more flexible (once paint flows through it) and they SHOULD HAVE included the swivel connector at no charge (you CAN buy it at any Wagner dealer for about $23 which is a small high considering what it is) because direction on a ladder or in a tight spot and trying to get the gun oriented properly is *irregularly* a pain!

Bottom line, this is an brilliant product, and will save you time and produce brilliant, qualified results. If it will spray elastomeric without a hiccup, it will spray ANYTHING. I used this product over several weeks, and many small sessions due to not being able to paint until (sorry to say) rainy season arrived. But, I cleaned it compulsively every time! If you don’t plot on cleaning it in this manner, despite the brilliant results and painting time saved, then stick to brushes and rollers. I find a number of the negative comments to be petty, at best. One or two may have had a legitimately defective sprayer, but most of the negative comments are just not very well thought out.

.. and NO .. I don’t work for Wagner, nor do I have any financial interest in Wagner. I just appreciate a product that makes a despised task much simpler and gives qualified results.

    Worthless
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have owned this product for about six months and I have tried several projects with it. It is, in a word, worthless.

The largest problem is the paint nozzle gets clogged up while I am spraying. I have used various types of paint including Kilz, and Bear. This was acrylic latex paint, white usually. I have even tried thinning the paint to make it work longer, but no use. It has clogged up after spraying for 10 minutes or so.

This is not a cleaning problem. I spray thinner (water in latex’s case) through the sprayer until it comes out clear, and do the same with the priming cycle. When I am done there is no evidence of paint. I disassemble the sprayer and clean it, as well as the outlet valve. All is as clean as I can make it before I pack it away.

Other problems: the gun leaks at the handle unless tightened to a max degree of force, cleaning the bin and cleaning in general takes an enormous amount of water, the spray is heavy at times and light at others, the hose is like trying to control a vehicle suspension spring as it is hard to go (it is not like an air hose – this hose is not flexible), the paint bin is hard to empty, the “nut” holding the outside part of the exit valve is a very large size and finding a wrench to take it off to clean it will be a problem unless you are an auto mechanic that works on diesel trucks (the 16 wheelers), the cord to the unit is very small which means I had to use an extension cord every time I ran the machine, the unit pulls a lot of power and I tripped breakers more than once… I could go on and on but the reader will be with you by now.

The paint crew is a poorly thought out and poorly assembled product that NO one should buy under any circumstances. I regret the day I saw it and I truly regret the day I bought it.

Not even worth 1 star..Home Depot stopped recommending
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Just want to confirm what a lousy, overpriced, sack of you know what this thing is. I was so pissed..Second time it just stopped holding pressure. I painted a garage and cleaned the thing very well being careful to follow the manual. The second time I used it, the inlet valve o-rings started breaking and the thing would not hold pressure. I replaced the o-rings a half dozen times and finally threw the thing across the yard. Home depot said they stopped recommending these things.

Just to confirm what another reviewer says…Believe it!!

    1. Handle over lid gets in the way when trying to remove lid to add more paint. That thing is always in the way.

    2. What is the deal with the white plastic filter in the hopper that has to be depressed to open a valve to the pump? Because that sucks! Sometimes the valve pops up after you have added paint and then you get to stick your hand in the paint to depress the filter and thus the valve….lots of fun and not messy at all.

    3. I like the small drip catching channel under the pump-to-hose tie. It efficiently catches all of the drips…and channels them into the inaccessible nether-regions under the motor, which makes for fantastic cleaning fun. Has anyone there figured out how to rinse that thing out yet? I considered drilling holes.

    4. Oh, and speak of cleaning in general. Who thought it would be a excellent thought to take the paint, which is neatly contained in it’s can, and have the user pour it into a huge hard-to-empty-and-clean tray which must all be done without being able to remove said tray, or get water on the non-sealed electric motor (especially brilliant on a wet-pump device).

    5. Was that really the best place to place an in-line filter….in the handle?

    6. There is no way to know if your hose is really tight enough until you turn the pump on and and are bathed in a lovely white semi-gloss latex. The mess on my patio would make Jackson Pollock proud.

    7. So…waterbased paint in a pump that can rust? Stainless steel anyone? I know it’s more expensive but it’s not unobtainium. The information say to fill the pump with oil for storage. I like oil in my waterbased paint; anyone else?

Bought 2 months ago for my hubby to paint garage this month, so I cant even return the damn thing. We got primer on the shed and about two feet of a two tale two car garage and the thing quit. Just stopped. We emptied the paint, cleaned the unit, primed it AND strained the paint just to be sure and started again, and got about another two feet into the job and it stopped again. Went down 22.5 miles to Home Depot and questioned about the history of this unit, and they said it DOESNT HANDLE EXTERIOR LATEX paint very well. Well that is why I bought it!!It says it can handle that type of paint. What, are they just lying to make a sale?

Bought a Graco, worth every penny. This Wagner is a hunk of crap.

As others have discussed, this product is effectively a one-use product. I don’t feel too dreadful since I bought a recon unit off eBay for less than $100. It worked liked a champ for my painting of a large farm shed. Then, as others describe, the pressure dropped much. I was still able to use it to paint another small shed, but it was slow going. As others learned the primary problem is the outlet valve. I ordered two substitution ones for about $30 and thought that would at least allow me to end the other buildings, but both of these failed within two hours. Experiences seem to vary with this machine; maybe you’ll roll the dice and get 30-40 hours before replacing parts. The gun and operation are brilliant, but, so I will probably upgrade to a 9140 or 1420 so I can at least re-use the gun and hose.

The setup and cleanup is an overhead that makes this product useful only for moderate to large projects. This is right of $2500 sprayer systems I’ve used, but, so it may be endemic to power sprayers in general. I bought this for a house I’m remodeling, and I’ve learned to plot ahead and paint 2-3 rooms at a time with it to justify the setup and cleanup time. When the hose is pressurized, it is stiff and a bit ungainly, so you also need to avoid “painting yourself into a corner.” The spray pattern is excellent. Bottom line, I’ve saved a lot of time and effort and gotten fantastic results with this unit.

I still don’t be with you what Wagner took a very excellent design, like the 1620 which I now have, and said “screw it”. The hopper on this machine is probably the dumbest thing in commerce I have ever seen. It makes it intolerably hard to clean this thing within a reasonable amount of time. I spent and hour and fifteen minutes one time just cleaning this thing. Even cleaning it painstakingly does not mean that it was cleaned painstakingly. You will have something left over in the machine which will ruin it. Even with this cleaning process after about 20 gallons of paint including drywall primer and kilz primer, it failed. I despise to waste 200 so I will get it working again only to sell it to someone else.

Do yourself a favor. If you are going to paint anything either get a pro model 1420, 1620 or 1920 or get one of those hand held sprayers. Don’t waste your time and money on this machine.

I wish I had read the reviews before I bought the “Paint Screw!” I was amazed at how well it worked the first time (about 5 gals of paint). Then after the thorough cleaning supplies, the sticking the hand into the hopper full of paint and the decreasing pressure, I was a small less enthused. Then the enthusiasm turned 180 degrees when with the next use the sprayer would barely function and so I turned to the troubleshooting and found the problems, contacted Wagner only to find that this was “expected wear.” Hmmm, 10 gallons of paint and all the valves have to be replaced. Well, I had no choice since I was in the middle of the job (with deadline). So I paid next-day freight and bought 2 valves for a total of $50.00. Then even after replacing the valves it only sprayed (and will lower pressure) about 2 gallons before giving up again. Now I have to buy or rent a sprayer to end the work I’ve wasted 2 days on. I will be returning it for a full refund as this is a defective product design by any standard. It appears that the only excellent ratings here are people who have only used it once.

I may never buy a wagner product again, and certainly won’t without checking the reviews.

I agree with all the terrible things people have said about this machine in their reviews. The machine worked fantastic the first time. Then, after spraying only a few gallons of paint, we had to replace the valves. Then it worked again for a only couple gallons. Rumor has it that, if you are using a primer like Kilz a valve will only last 10-15 gallons. I just despise this machine. When you take the pains to carve out time for painting, you get really mad with a malfunctional machine. Read the other reviews for details on what goes incorrect, and believe every word of it!

Really liked this spray unit the first time I used it. Place on lots of paint and it cycled on and off as it should have. (Turns off when the preasure is up to spec. and on as you spray)

It was really cleaned and place away to be used for the next weekend. Problem then was that it would not get up to preasure (would just run constantly with a very poor spray pattern). Took all the paint out, throughly cleaned again but still the same problem

Can’t see spending nearly 200.00 for a unit that works once. Will be returning it.

I bought the paint crew from Costco in July and used it to primer and paint a 3br home. The paint crew performed beyond my expectations. I followed all information and encountered no problems spraying 14 gals of paint and primer over 3 days. At one point, I needed to stop and buy more paint from my supplier. I followed Wagner information and stopped for approx. one hr, and upon my return, resumed painting with no clogging or other difficulties. I did buy a 3′ swivel extension hose that made painting very simple. In addition to the initial 3 days, I also painted the trim over two seperate weekends with no problems. I did not have to thin the primer or paint, but I did strain both prior to pouring into the hopper. Clean up took some time, but it was worth it. I did use a Wagner lubricant as a final step in the clean up. The paint crew allowed me to complete my home painting job with enough time left in the summer to replace my deck with a larger one.

I bought this unit from Costco. I hoped to save time in painting a garage. I found the unit rediculously over packed requiring way too much time to unpack and set up. It is jammed with hard to remove plastic plugs and paper which makes set up time consuming. After setting it up, searching for the stupid drain valve that one must hit twice before using, I turned it on and all I got was a stream and not a spay of paint. I switched from prime to spay a couple of time and it still would not work. It stalled everytime I switched to spray. At this time I was one hour into the project and no paint was on the garage. I chose to place this product where I place all my worthless tools. Into the dumpster. With gas at $3.00 a gallon I wasn’t about to drive 170 miles back to Costco to return it. If and when I want to buy another paint sprayer I will make sure it is engineered in Germany or Japan. I buy tools to save time not waste it.

When finished painting, I painstakingly cleaned up all of the parts, and and came back a few hours later to place some oil in the pump for storage. I flip the switch and….nada. Checked the extension cord, breaker for the outlet, and even tried another outlet…nope still not running. I didn’t see a circuit breaker anywhere on the motor so unless there is one under the housing I am out of options. This is very frustrating to be having problems with a $200 sprayer the second time it is used. That’s Kwality with a k.

Aside from the current state of inoperability, I have a few issues with the design. Just my thoughts…do what them what you will.

I first bought the unit and brought it home. What a nice way to save time and get a smooth paint job! The set-up was simple, filling and priming the pump…not so terrible, and the first coat went off without a hitch…but that’s where the fun finished.

First let me tell you I used to work in a auto body shop. So I am familiar with siphon feed spray equipment. I found it hard to believe that any type of spray equipment could spray heavy latex paint. The Paint Crew sprayed ten gallons of paint in about 2 hours. I painted the inside of patio roof, shed, aluminum siding, down spouts. All painted with incredible results! The siding looks new again with a factory end.

I felt like Tom Sawyer. I couldn’t get the paint gun out of my brothers hand. We worked as a team, loading the sprayer, looking for missed spots and shielding areas with cardboard . Would I recommend this tool, YES!

    Update;

One other thing, I didn’t use the paint crew for some time. I cleaned it as per directions. And place it away for more than a year. So I figured It was ready to paint with. I loaded the hopper with paint and switched it on, nothing! I had to dump the paint and disassemble it. Not a huge deal when it is clean. But it is a mess when it is loaded with paint. The hopper valve was stuck shut. A slight squeeze and it was free. My advice is to disassemble it for a quick inspection after storage. It would have saved me an hour and a lot of clean up.

I bought the Paint Crew to help me with an exterior paint job on my home. My home has a stucco exterior. A roller would well on stucco but the sprayer was brilliant. I used a excellent quality exterior latex paint. With the Paint Crew the coverage on my home is so nice, even and the tool makes the job go very quickly. Most importantly, this thing makes painting fun! Note that the Paint Crew is not for a quick touch up. You better be ready to do some serious painting when you break out the Paint Crew.

The reasons I give it 4 stars are:

    - I had some problems with overspray but it was likely my fault. The overspray spreads out much farther than you would reckon.

    - They need a way to paint straight from a container. I was using 5 gallon buckets and did not like filling the hopper over and over.

    - Cleanup could be better. It takes a long time and a lot of water.

Would I buy again? Without a doubt. Fantastic product for the money.

I bought this expecting it to save time overall, yet still expecting some problems. I found that this sprayer worked so well, I have very small to complain about.

I painted a 1200 square foot house exterior in 8 hours, including masking. I spent more time moving the ladder than really spraying paint. The coverage was fantastic, and I sprayed all day without the nozzle getting clogged or having to mess with the equipment in any way.

Cleanup took about 1/2 hour. The hopper is made of a type of plastic that repels paint, so it poured out quite easily. The rest that remained, I swiped out with a paintbrush back into the can. Very small paint was wasted. Cleanup was relatively clean and paint & dirty water were easily contained in a 5 gallon bucket.

The few things that I wish were better, but aren’t extremely sticky: The directions seem overwhelming at first. They aren’t as hard as they seem, but they could be written in a way to make getting started less daunting. When the hose is full, it is not very flexible – that makes aiming the trigger while hanging on a ladder a small cumbersome. The hopper needs to have enough paint in it to pressurize – at least a gallon.

This sprayer was a huge time saver – and I used less paint than I would have by brushing or rollering.

I would highly recommend the buy and use of this sprayer. The spray was very qualified like and you can knock out a wall in what seems like only a few minutes. I laid it down a small too light and realized after about 4 walls that I could have just sprayed it on pretty heavy if I wanted to. The sprayer is a qualified type sprayer, dealing with the hose is a hassle but as quick as this sprayer lets you do the job you can deal with the hose. It could use a swivel. This sprayer will spray latex paint right out of the can, I didn’t filter it out because I was just too nervous to get to work with it and end the job. Clean up requires time and patience, and reading the directions is a must. Also putting this guy away for the night because you can’t spray until you’ve masked all, requires that you read the instuctions carefully and follow it to the tee. If you tape and mask all before you spray you can end the spray painting part of it in a day. Pressure washing can take a week, and masking can take a whole day plus. But spraying is a breeze with this guy. One last thing, the hopper will empty out pretty quick, you’ll need more paint than what is normally not compulsory. about 25% more. As a result, the cost of the paint, masking and paint accessories, renting pressure washing, purchasing this paint sprayer and renting a scaffold saved us thousands over the qualified painters quote. It took a lot of time because this is not our business, but in the end very satisfied with the results.

I bought a new painter from Lowes NIB. After painting the cieling of three rooms the pump continued to run and would not “pressure up”. I tried to fix the unit with no success. I returned the unit and got another on. After about the same amount of paint I ran into the same issue. If this happens to you take a look at the output valve. When you take out the valve seperate the 2 pieces the collar and the valve. It doesn’t look like it would come apart but the valve itself will open up. Inside the valve piece there is a small o-ring that gets ruined causing the unit to malfunction. Now that I know this, I like the routine of the sprayer.

I bought this sprayer back in August and must say in general I really like it. It does a fantastic job delivering the paint evenly, and the spray gun is pro-level.

Cons: The 25′ hose broke the second time I used it. It started to leak right at the swivel, and I had paint oozing out before I shut it off. I had to go to Lowe’s and buy a 50′ hose which cost me another $50, but this hose has lasted through several uses.

Also, the output gasket has to be replaced often. This gasket broke on my third use. I called Wagner and they told me the output gasket must be replaced every 15 to 20 gallons of paint. I told them I had run less than 5 gallons of paint through it, and they agree to send me a new one for free.

Also, although they claim this is for the “heaviest” applications, I just used it to spray Glidden’s Gripper (primer)which you need a .015 tip. I bought the tip, and the second gasket blew after only about 5 gallons. I guess this is a small too thick for this machine, but they say it’s ok in their box Box journalism.

In a nutshell, this machine delivers brilliant routine, but if you’re painting the entire exterior of your house like me, expect it to need maintenance.

    Wagner Paint Crew
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’m from Russia formerly, and my English is quite limited , especially technical English. We bought a house in AL the last autumn and went here from VA. It didn’t have a shed, so I had to build (to buy) one. Finally, I got a huge metal Arrow shed from Lowes. It is a excellent shed, but needs to be painted to prevent rust. They come scratched out from the factory, made of very thin steel, so if the original coating is scratched, rust is just a matter of time.

I was about to buy 10-15 cans of regular spray paint, but was having doubts it would hold. I wanted to apply a much thicker coat, like one latex paint can provide. So, I started to look for a paint sprayer that can spray latex (acrylic) paint. I can probably fix T-72 medium tank, but I know nothing about paint sprayers and never used one before. In Russia we use a vacuum cleaner to spray paint. They come there with an attachment to place a hose with a glass jar to the outer hole. After doing some research I bought this paint sprayer from Amazon. K-mart also sells them for $199, but I didn’t want to pay tax and spend my gas to drive there.

What can I say? It is a very well made unit. Yes, it is made in China, but the quality is fantastic. I reckon it is one of the most “qualified looking” tools I ever had.

The manual is very detailed, with a lot of pictures. I would say it is too detailed because I was frightened in the beginning that I can’t remember all the things how to operate the unit. But when you start spraying it is very simple and you don’t have to reckon about anything – it just sprays nothing if you forget something.

It sprays heavy exterior latex paint just fine. It took me about 5 min to cover about 80 sq.feet each long side of the shed has. The quality the coating is pretty excellent. Sure, it is not as smooth as the original factory oil-based coating my shed has, but for latex paint and a guy who did it the first time in his life it was just fine. The unit sprays quite heavy coats. I needed 2 coats of white paint to absolutely cover dark base coating. And sure I made some mistakes at first over spraying, so I had to take a chisel and clean one of the shed walls absolutely to repaint it. But it is my own mistake, not the unit’s terrible work.

    Pros and cons.

Pros: Well made. Fantastic manual (READ IT!). Very excellent final results for home use.

Cons: Small power cord (4′ I reckon), you will need a 12 gauge extension cord. The hose between the unit and spraying gun was too long for me. It is hard and heavy, made of pressure and oil resistant plastic, and has more than 10′ of length. Power switch is not protected, and 5 or 6 times the long hose has pushed on it switching the sprayer off. I wish the hose to have 2 parts you can joint together if you need more length. As other people say, when you have less than 1″ paint left in the hopper, the pump starts working constantly (usually it shuts off after 2-3 sec) because unit looses pressure. The pump is not extremely noisy though.

Cleaning the unit is a separate tale. It took me 1 hour to absolutely clean it the very first time. I used about 2 gallons of water to clean it after latex paint. This is why there is no way I’m ever going to place any oil-based paint into this unit. Working with 1 gallon of a solvent cleaner in that case to clean it after work can be very frustrating and expensive.

I’ve rented airless sprayers before from the “orange” store. This sprayer works better than anything I’ve rented before. I got the pump out of the box, assembled it with 2 screws and glanced over the directions. I sprayed 1 1/2 gallons of satin white latex on some waincot I installed the previous weekend. The machine performed impeccably. This thing sprays really, really nice. Clean-up was typical of an airless. 1/2hr. and I was ready to place it away. Only drawback was the hose. It needs a swivel in the worst way. Other than that, the machine really impressed me (and I’m not easily impressed). Glad I bought and highly recommend.
