Returned it same day… a sad example from a excellent company
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this at WalMart for $99 after getting annoyed with how long it was taking me to paint some cabinets with a compressor driven (not turbine) HVLP gravity feed gun. I had a 1.4 tip spraying water based zinsser primer thinned 20%. I could only get that dainty gun to spray evenly with about a 2″ pattern. So, a family member had bought a Wagner sprayer from Lowes for a small over a hundred bucks. I made the mistake of thinking this was the one they were raving about. He really had bought the airless turbine system. Likes it, it works for all he’s used it for and he said cleanup is simple too.

THIS MODEL but, I returned after attempting to spray that same thinned primer through it. It didn’t really have the ability to pull the paint up the tube. Even thinned 20% it would not pass through the pickup tube screen and kept clogging the nozzle and tube. The tube even after heating with scalding hot water to get rid of the plastics memory… it would not ‘forget’ its tight packed shape and kept trying to coil back up on me. This caused my paint can to tip over as I was painting. ARG! The cup worked a small better but was messy and either way it has about 3000% more overspray and bounceback than my small HVLP gun.

As other reviewers said.. its loud, it vibrates, its heavy, it stopped pulling paint from the can, it seized up even after cleaning and oiling.

Hey maybe it would be fantastic for staining a fence or something but the directions did not help at all for really putting paint/stain through it.

Do not buy this. Sure, after a whole day of practice and testing what thinning percentage and product you should use etc… you might get a honest result. But, there are better options out there. Get one of them. Leave this on the shelf.

O, and my very first impression with this was when I opened the box it said “Do not return to the store, Call us first. 1800 blah blah blah.” Now, that is NOT the first thing I want to see when I open a box. It just not so subtly infers that it is very likely I’m going to have a problem with it because so many people have returned it they want to talk you out of it somehow before you do! LOL — I called anyway, they were closed. I returned it to the store. No questions questioned.

I agree with all the negative comments on this board. I read them all before I bought, but still really wanted to try it out. I’m pretty excellent with tools and thought I’d be able be able to work within its limitations…anything to avoid having to use a roller on my entire fence!

This thing worked for all of about 45 seconds. You can monkey with it all you want, thin the paint until its water, but what a waste of time, and paint (ie. money). No matter what I did, it kept getting clogged! I have half a mind to send Wagner a bill for all the paint this stupid thing made me waste! It leaks from the world over, no matter how tight you screw all on. I found it amusing that even in the directions, they mention some of the sounds this thing will make, and urge you not to return the thing to the store. They say call customer service, try this, try that, maybe the paint is too thick, etc…..

If I’m spending $100 on something, I want it to work like advertised. Period. I do not want to waste literally HOURS trying to figure out this piece of junk, experimenting with dilutions, adjusting something then cleaning the whole thing out to try AGAIN, etc. It should work out of the box. It should be able to handle regular latex paint that I bought new at the same time I bought the painter. It shouldn’t make an absolute mess and waste the paint that I paid REAL MONEY for. Bottom line: this thing sucks. I despise it.

I Do Not Work for Wagner!

Let me make that clear. Nor am I from a Chinese delegation whose job it is to support the manufacturing industry. Reading reviews, you might be suspect this of me, or some other motivation, considering how I give this item a 5 star review, in light of all the 1 star reviews. First, I have used it twice, painting my house. It worked well both times. Saved a lot of time. I plot on finishing the spraying in one more day, as cleanup with a paint sprayer takes some time, but I am very pleased with it, and surprise, considering I read all these and other reviews prior to purchasing it. I don’t find the reservoir size a problem, one fill goes a long way, and it is not hard to refill it. And I would not want it any heavier. I have not used the attachment to the paint can, seems not worth the distress to me. It is nice to not be attached to anything, and as I said, one fill does a lot of painting. I found using lower speed #1 setting works best outside. The #2 setting might work better indoors, where you have no wind. I have turned the black flow knob full up, not sure why one would want to turn it down, but probably there is some attention for that. The directions were simple and virtually clear. I had a few questions. I was not able to get to customer service on Monday, they rumor has it that have a limited queue space, but did get through on Wednesday on my first call, with a 7 minute wait, and got excellent answers. My questions were “Do you need to lubricate it every time you fill up the paint reservoir?” – answer, no, just on first use or after cleaning. And I was confused on tightening the sprayer tip, and orientation of the tip. I did not realize that the black part of the sprayer tip screws in, the the red part rotates after the black part is screwed in, duh! One last word of advice, I suggest that you use a few cue tips to wipe out the metal part after you use the wire cleaning brush, just look closely for any gunk anywhere that could clog things, look closely there and other places in the flow stream, to make sure it is clean. But you have to do that with any paint sprayer I am sure. Anyway, just want to help those who would not otherwise buy the item because of the terrible reviews. I reckon mostly people either don’t read the information and/or use their heads, or they expect a $400 paint sprayer for $80. I really don’t reckon the item I bought is any different from those bought by people trashing it here.

edit: I have completed my house painting, the spray gun performed well, I used it 5 times I reckon. I cannot say how well it will work indoors for me, I have not used it that way yet. I will give it a try later, and edit this again. But even if I find it only to have been effective for me with outside painting, I will be 5 star satisfied, it saved me a lot of time.

    Excellent result, honest learning curve
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this to paint over ’50′s style wooden tongue-and-groove paneling with a distressed end in order to save time. The product finished up being a time-saver, but not without a moderate learning curve. Some things to remember:

    Pros:

-Speed: When it worked, it covered quickly and very well. See comments below about thinning and remote suction, which were the two largest detriments to efficiency.

-Ease of cleaning: The entire assembly breaks down for mid-job cleaning very easily. I’m not the most involuntarily inclined person, but after a couple of tries, I was able to strip down, rinse and mend this like Forrest Gump with his rifle. There are only about 8 parts and a very logial design allows for a quick takedown and reassembly. The final cleanup isn’t any worse than cleaning rollers, etc. after a manual paint job.

-Minimal overspray: I was prepared for a huge mess but the unit did a excellent job of putting paint where I wanted and not making a giant cloud. It’s not at all like spray painting from a can. Be sure to stay close to your target (the opposite of spraying from a can) like the manual advises. Still, be sure to cover all in the room.

    Cons:

-Thinning the paint is a must: Home Depot advertised that the Pro Painter Plus did not require the paint to be thinned, which was a huge selling point. But, the gun had a hard time spraying thicker primer (Kilz-2). There was simply not enough suction to let the gun spray smoothly unless the lower speed setting was used, resulting in clogs, cleaning, etc.

-Remote suction assembly needs work: After reading complaints about the 1.5 quart container needing refills, I chose to pull directly from a 2 gallon bucket, which worked for about 10 seconds until the feed tube surfaced and started sucking air, requiring the unit to be cleaned, reprimed, etc. The assembly which is supposed to clamp the feed tube to the bucket is seriously wimpy. I had ongoing issues with the filter assembly surfacing and sucking air, to the point where I had to carry the bucket in one hand (holding the paint can handle and remote suction assembly in the same hand to make sure it stayed down in the paint) and spray with the other, which is quite a workout. Do yourself a favor and secure the clamp assembly to the bucket with vise-grips, binder clips, etc. and you’ll save on frustration and cleaning.

-Vibration: This device runs like a small jackhammer, my hands are aching from holding onto it for 4 hours. Get earplugs for the noise.

-Ventilator: Unless you are outside (or delight in huffing latex), splurge and get a excellent ventilator. This thing puts a lot of paint up on the wall and puts lots of fumes into the air, even if there is not a lot of overspray.

I’d beyond doubt buy it again, once the few bugs are worked out it ends up being a nice time-saver.

This product is a rip-off, plain and simple. The box states that it can be used for staining, but doesn’t mention that you have to buy the stain tip unconnectedly. Used it for 20 minutes and there was more paint on the ground (due to overspray) and the unit itself than there was on the piece I was painting. The spray was uneven and I had to go over each area several times. I unplugged it and threw the whole thing in the trash. I finished the job quicker using a brush. I will never buy another Wagner product, period.

I was reading the reviews considering purchasing another for a family member. I have owned this product for about 6 mths now and used it for many tasks including respraying 15 6panel wood doors, a full basement, and several bedrooms. I have to admit that the first time using this product, I was disapointed and frustrated thinking that it was the gun. After calming down and adjusting the settings and playing around with some scraps I figured it out. One suggestion that I read somewhere is to use a product called flotrol for latex based paint to help thin the media.

Overall, I reckon that with patience this product will work fantastic. There is a fantastic deal of cleaning that goes with this product but I have used it now over 8 times with no issues. Plus, the end that this product will leave is hard to match. I was absolutly thrilled with how it did on the doors. Just make sure to have a small foam roller handy to blend in the ocassional splatter.

I must admit that there is a learning curve but it makes painting very very quick and simple. The most hard part to using this product is the cleanning but after you have cleaned it once or twice it shouldnt take any longer than cleanning brushes and rollers. Make sure to use a drop cloth and to tape because if you dont adjust it well you will get some blow back (misting). Also this is very vital! Close your windows or remove the screens or the paint will get trapped in it when you spray. Works fantastic on walls, decking, lattice work and doors. Buy it and read the book you will be very pleased.

Decent product if you are aware of and can work within its limitations.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
    Pros:

Two to three times quicker than a brush. Nice, even spray. Minimal overspray. Can handle water based exterior paint with no problem (when using cup). Filter at the end of suction tube prevents clogging. Simple clean up.

    Cons:

Loud. Not fantastic for angled spraying. Frequent refill of 1.5 quart cup before all paint is used up. Does spit globs of paint, but you can minimize this.

I have never used any sort of paint sprayer before, so I cannot compare this product to any other. Also, my sprayer is model number 0525151 which I bought from Lowe’s, but it has the exact same specs as this product. It also looks exactly the same except it is black, not yellow. I used this sprayer on an exterior paint job with lots of exposed drain and vent pipes.

First of all, let me state some vital details which Wagner did not tell me about this product, and which I figured out myself. As another reviewer said, this sprayer is loud. It sounds just like a portable air compressor and is about as loud. But, in my opinion, it falls just shy of requiring the use of ear plugs, though you may find it more comfortable to use the sprayer with ear safeguard. Also, this sprayer does not like to spray while tilted either forwards or backwards when the paint cup is not full. Doing so introduces air into the suction tube which will make the sprayer spit out globs of paint. I imagine this makes the sprayer less than ideal for decks. The best time to spray over and under pipes and window trim/sills is when the reservoir cup is full of paint. Even if you keep the sprayer honestly level, it still will on occasion spit out globs of paint. The only solution is to keep a brush handy to wipe the globs away. When the paint level goes below the suction tube the sprayer will also spit out globs of paint. The suction tube does not extend to the bottom of the reservoir cup, so you will always have at least an inch or more of paint left in the bottom of the cup when you must refill. Therefore, the actual usable capacity of the cup is less than 1.5 quarts. Also, in the user’s guide, it says you should use the gun at a duty cycle of 15 seconds on and 5 seconds off. So if you want to extend the life of the sprayer, you shouldn’t be doing any unremitting spraying for more than 15 seconds.

During first encounter with the sprayer it leaked paint from behind the tip because I did not tighten the spray tip enough. After cleaning the parts and tightening the tip correctly, I tried the 6 foot suction hose. It was a complete disaster. The hose did not want to stay uncurled. There is no attachment to hold the hose to a five gallon bucket of paint. The plastic clip was not strong enough to stay on a paint can. And the gun was dripping huge drops of paint from the tip and spraying globs of paint all over the place. The paint came out at an agonizingly slow speed too. The moral of the tale is do not use the 6 foot hose for any latex paint.

Next, I tried the cup and the results were pretty incredible compared to the hose. The paint came out in a nice, even spray. And it was quick (compared to a brush)! I was able to place on a thick, even coat of primer and top coat with no problem (except for the periodic globs of paint I had to smooth out). I didn’t even have to thin the paint either. There was beyond doubt a lot of refilling of the cup going on, but in the end it was worth it.

In end, if you can live with and work around some of the issues of this sprayer, it is possible to get excellent results and save a lot of time as well. As always, unlike the people in the advertisements, remember to place on your safety equipment. And make sure you tape up and cover anything you don’t want to get paint on.

Read the reviews. Figured, “I’m excellent with tools. These guys just aren’t keeping the sprayer clean. Or they’re not thinning the paint enough.” I was incorrect, buckos. This thing worked for exactly ninety seconds and then, despite a complete disassemble and cleaning and thinning the paint to the consistency of water it never, ever, EVER, WORKED AGAIN!! DO NOT BUY THE WAGNER POWER PAINTER PLUS!! DO NOT BUY THIS THING!!!

I bought the Wagner Power Painter Plus (6.6 GPH) at Home Depot to stain and waterproof a newly installed redwood fence. Part of the attraction was the 6 foot hose to draw stain directly from the bucket instead of using the 1.5 quart bottle. The Optimus tip worked well in spraying the flat fence boards and kickboard but the hose to draw from the bucket did not work well at all. The hose come tightly rolled in the package and will not unroll and stay straight. It might if you leave it in the sun for a couple of hours or submerse it in boiling water. I tried it in a 5 gallon paint bucket and it worked well as long at the bucket was 3/4 full. After that the hose curled at the end and would raise the intake filter out of the liquid unless I held it with one hand and sprayed with the other. VERY messy. I finally just used the 1.5 quart bottle and it would spray two eight foot sections and I would then refill it. The spray coverage was excellent and I was satisfied with the results. The directions say to get the stain tip for spraying lattice. I did order the stain tip from Amazon but it would not fit on the piston tip even though the packaging said it fit 4.2 GPH to 7.2 GPH Wagner Sprayers. It appeared to need an adapter to be able to screw onto the piston tip.

All in all it worked well to stain and waterproof 290 feet of fence with lattice on top but I would not use it for a house.

I bought the Wagner Power Painter Lithium at a local store. For $169, I epxected a fantastic product. But, I bought it to stain the deck, and after getting all my materials ready I read the lessons book,( know, real men don’t do this# and learned I needed a stain tip. I checked four local stores and everyone sold the paint guns, but no one sold the necessary spray tip. I ordered a stain tip from Amazon. They filled the ordered quickly and I was pleased when it arrived so quick. Then I learned that tip did not fit this gun, so more money wasted. I tried the paint gun with the tip it came with, but is was more like using it as an applicator as I had to use a brush to even out the paint. Eventually it became quicker and less messy to use a brush like the ancient days. I called the help number three times to learn them closed on Saturday, 5PM on a Wednesday. The one time I did reach them during their hours I received a recording stating they were busy and try to again later.

VERY upset with Wagner and stores selling the product, but not making the accessories easily available. I already used the gun once, so doubt I can return it.

By the way, if you buy this item to use indoors I would suggest you don’t, based on the mess I experienced outside.

The Wagner web site states that Sears and K-Mart also sell their products, so I also checked those places, wasting more time. Sears did not carry the Wagner product #at least here) and K-mart had two lower priced guns, but no accessories.

A waste of time and money
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Wagner should be ashamed to sale this product. I read some of the reviews but thought it would be OK for painting a deck. What a huge mistake! A waste of money and time.

Some of the reviews complained about the remote suction tube staying in the paint can. There is a clip in this one. It didn’t clip into place too well on the paint can. I just finished up sticking the tube down in the can.

All I got was globs of paint in the center. I thinned a small, tested it. Thinned it more and tested more. Repeat, Repeat. Spraying vertical surfaces was poor routine. When I pointed down to spray the decking surface, LARGE drops of paint dropped to the boards. I spent an hour and a half trying to get a pattern that did not have globs (or worse) in the center. Never did get something that was square. I am not going for a qualified end here. I just some thing to keep the boards painted that doesn’t look like a 3 year ancient painted it. I figured a half a gallon was enough testing.

And clean up? This was latex. Never did get the paint residue out of the suction tube.

Oh, let me call the help desk. It is open only on weekdays. When are most people going to use this? On a weekend of course. What a joke. I don’t know if I can find my receipt to return it but I am going to try. If they won’t take it back, I will throw it away. No sense in someone else wasting time and money.

I had a small project and bought this on impulse, thinking it would help. What a mistake. After 3 mostly wasted hours I was back to brushes.

I expect that if all situation are categorically perfect, this power sprayer might work well… but for me this tool was a total hassle. It’s very touchy and hard to get all “just right” so it will work effectively. Then, there’s the cleaning. What a mess. In total, I probably got about 10 minutes of decent painting from my 3 hours with this tool. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this. It looks excellent and seems like a handy thought, but it’s useless.

Don’t waste your money on this POS. If you’re painting a large project, like a house or fence, rent a qualified sprayer. If you’re just painting a small project, use a brush and/or roller, or perhaps, an aerosol spray can. This thing is hard to contol, has a LOT of overspray, and goes through paint like it costs 10 cents a quart. I went through 1 1/2 quarts in 5 minutes or less. It’s loud, heavy, and vibrates like all get out. Used it once and took it back for a refund.

Bought this to help my son paint our house. The first day it worked fine. He cleaned it painstakingly, but the second day, it started leaking, so we returned it to Lowes and got another (same product). Worked fantastic that day, cleaned it, then the next day more distress. The sprayer would not spray smoothly, kept spitting out chunks of paint. He cleaned it again, and same problem. So we took it back again, and this time spent twice the money for the Wagner Procoat airless sprayer. We’ll see how that one works. The Power Painter Plus model worked fantastic WHEN it worked, so if you have a one day project, it will probably cut your painting time greatly. Just doesn’t seem to work on day 2.

  18. LMY says:

    Not user friendly
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I personally found this product simple to assemble, load and use. I admit, to get the spray coverage applied evenly will take some skill — the spray seems to provide better coverage at the outer edges than in the middle area so you beyond doubt will be doing 2 coats or respraying the same area over as you go.

Secondly, you’ll find that 1.5 quart paint container simply doesn’t last long enough. Fence comes in 8′ sections and to get this painted with decent coverage, the container held enough paint for no more than 2 panels or 5-10 minutes worth — so you are often refilling the product container. Still have to repaint though, due to uneveness in first coat.

Lastly, my husband who is not fantastic at troubleshooting things endlessly had distress getting the paint to even spray through the nozzle. If you don’t ensure the filtered suction tube is seated tightly, it comes loose while you fill with paint or during painting, upon which you will have to uncouple the paint container from the nozzle, get your hands coated with paint to grasp the suction tube and jam it back into the nozzel. Lastly — and this is a dealbreaker in my eyes – excellent luck finding parts for this thing. You can find the piston and atomizer valves at Lowes or Home Depot – but there is a nicely charted parts list on the back of the manual and those parts, their part numbers and even the model number for this painter don’t cross reference anywhere — even at [...]. The vendors they suggest buying the parts from need customers to advise the PSI (which is not indicated anywhere — only by the GPH sprayed). You simply cannot buy couplings, spray tips, etc. online or locally.

By the way, this painter is louder than a 2200psi powerwasher but you won’t see that in their marketing.

My model number for this product is on the item as 0525804B and identified as Wagner Project Power Painter Optimus Plus 6.6. I paid $99 at Walmart and found a similar item at Lowes for $[...]. My setup came with a plastic storage box and is the 6.6 gph model. I rated this item a 3 because when it ran, it was a timesaver. We’ve taken it out for the 3rd use and the paint container fell off the nozzel due to the piston/spring assembly snapping in half (I’m guessing either due to him not properly seating the paint container or caused by the weight of the paint in the container) and fell to the ground. I’m now searching for that part to be able to use the $100 power painter again.

Clean-up isn’t crazy hard and no less cumbersome than cleaning brushes and mess using standard tools.

But, my husband’s mantra since this product encounter has been “I could do this quicker and better with a roller and paint tray…
